Early R-boat (R1-10 maybe). Looks like it is probably in the Adriatic since it has a Balkankreutz on the bridge.

Many of this class ended their days in this region.

Hi Dave,

where do you see the "Balkenkreuz"? I only notice the "Caro" symbol.

That little black mark. Come to think of it, it may be a blacked out swastika. That would put
Her on the West coast of Italy.

From the shape and size of the gun turret this is more likely a heavy cruiser of the Hipper Class with 8 inch guns.

Based the on the size of gun and shape of the turret I would say that this is a heavy cruiser of the Admiral Hipper class.

Sorry for the double post. I got a message on the first of non-transmission. An additional pictorial proof that it is not the Spey or Sheer is the absence of Range finder hoods on the turret. The pocket Battleships had very prominent hoods on the rear of both turrets. The relatively heavy tripod main mast mounted forward of the funnel is a further clue. The Sheer and Spey theirs lighter and mounted on the funnel. Incidentally this is prior to 1943 as the ship lacks a funnel cap. The photo was taken from the aft deck.

The old eyes are not what they use to be. What I wrongly interpreted as the funnel is the after Main battery director turned 180 degrees. This would put the tripod mast aft of the stack in the correct position of a Hipper class cruiser. as such no view of the stack is possible, so disregard my previous comments on the cap.
