What kind of gun?

#1

Post by Ortwin » 08 Jun 2021, 23:10

Hello,

can anybody help to identify the gun on the foto? Is this a british one or german? The foto was taken on a german Vp-boat in Norway.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Best regards

Looks like a 6 pounder except for the breech

So it ist british?
Perhaps a 4inch gun?
Is it possible that the breech had been removed?

Just that there are some similarities such as the bolting on of the recuperater cap

Image

and what looks like the shoulder guard on the left side of the breech

JMO it isnt a UK 4 inch gun which in the various marks seem much bigger guns

Hello Ludvig,

thank you very much for this very important information. 76mm Bofors seems to be indeed correct! Nice link!
Do you know if this weapon also was used by the British Navy for converted trawlers in WW II?

Can you also give some information about the attached foto? Probably it was taken in Molde. Seems that this former british trawler (perhaps ex BRADMAN?) was equipped with this gun...
I am not sure if we see the same ship as in the foto I posted before.
What do you think?

Best regards

Hello Ortwin
a) No connection with RN and this 76 mm HAK L/28 Bofors gun , but J have seen one 76 mm
Bofors as practise gun i England in WW 2 .
b) Molde Hafenschutzflotille / 68 . Vorpostenflotille only internet details
please see FB Norsk marinehistorie
c) the 76 mm HAK L/28 Bofors were used by 3 x big torpedoboats :
Trygg , Stegg and Snogg
Kjell
+ 17 guns on Norwegian guard ships in WW 1
Some use of guard ships in WW 2

Here is an newspaper link to the gun at Fossen Bratte

Hello Ortwin
Your photo no 1 and photo no 2 from your post # 9 shows an

76 mm HAK L/50 Bofors gun

This gun were used on 3 x Norwegian destroyers :
Draug , Troll and Garm ( Draug escaped to UK , remaining in German service
as Zick and Zack ) 6 x guns each
Two Norwegian minelayers Glommen and Laugen , 2 x guns each
Some use in German VP as your photos shows

By rare coincidence the Norwegian Defense Museum published an good gun photo ,
please see Facebook and typed in Forsvarsmuseet

Here in photo of Draug on the route to England in 1940 :

Hello,
another unknown gun (but a poor foto indeed).
Unknow gun.jpg
The ship was a former british trawler (perhaps trawler Bradman). At the time of the foto the ship was already in service for the german Kriegsmarine in Norway as a Vp-boat.
Perhaps someone has an idea?

Looks to me to be a 40 MM Bofors Flak 28 on a naval fixed pedestal mount.

I base this ID on the presence of the typical Bofors type feed mechanism on the top rear of the weapon as well as the tubes of the recuperator tube immediately below the barrel.
