I looks like there‘s a sailor standing in front of what might be a lowered gun barrel (below the h in koelsch). Could explain the missing elevated gun.
Hi Waleed, The ship to the right haave clearly a 15cm gun single mount, while the ship to the left have a twin turret mount....

Nobody for my last questions ?? :(

According to Ebay photo caption Z33 and Z34 destroyers but i am not sure. According to my information all Type 1936A destroyers received the twin 15cm front turret....

Sturm78
AIUI some of the earlier Type 1936A, from the Z23-Z30 Group completed in 1940/41, received a single 5.9” gun forward in lieu of the designed twin turret because production of the twin turret was running behind schedule. The survivors were refitted with the twin later.

The Type 36A(Mob) completed later, mostly had the twin turret from completion I believe (except maybe Z31).

Then, one of the two ships cannot be the Z33 or Z34 destroyer .....

I've delved into the deeper recesses of my library. Z23-31 were all completed with a single 5.9" mount forward. Z32 was the first (completed Sept 1942) to get the twin followed by Z33,34,37,38 & Z39 in 1943. Then from the beginning of 1943 all the early completions, except Z26 which had been lost in March 1942, were refitted with the twin turret. Z31 was probably the earliest to undergo the refit from Jan 1943. But those refits took the rest of the war with Z29 only beginning her turret refit in Dec 1944 and was still incomplete in May 1945.

So the destroyer on the right can't be either Z33 or Z34. But the photo, which looks to have been taken in Norway, could have been taken at almost any time between from Spring 1943 to the end of 1944.

Thanks EwenS,

So, probably the destroyer to the right is a Type 1936A, from the Z23-Z30 group....

Hi all,

Is it possible to differentiate between the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau battleships in this image ??
