Rockets Launched From Surface Ships

Post by Edward L. Hsiao » 04 Nov 2012 21:56

Gentlemen,

From "Die Deutsche Wochenschau 1945", I've seen surface-to-surface rockets launched from German escort ships at night. Were there any German action reports about the use of rockets at sea by German surface ships? I know that plenty of these rockets that were mounted on ships were used for anti-aircraft defense and there were reports of successes against flying airplanes.

Sincerely,

Gentlemen,

I guess the actions of German surface ships using rockets against land targets and airplanes are not well known in subjects of the Kriegsmarine. I know that almost every known type of small German combat surface ships were armed with rocket launchers in 1944 and 1945. I wonder if there were some S-boats that were armed with rockets?

Sincerely,

Hello,
do You mean that Wochenschau? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXS17-mwt4s and that piece? It was the 8.6 cm (3.4") Raketen Sprenggranate L/4.8 http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNGER_8 ... Rocket.htm. Here some draws.

Following German surface ships using rockets: Minensuchboote, Zerstoerer, Torpedoboote class 35 and 37, Flottentorpedoboote 1939, Vorpostenboote, MFP (?). Such little like Räumboote and E-Boats not.

What operations did the Kriegsmarine surface ships mounted with rockets particated in during WWII? I never heard of German destroyers firing rockets at Soviet shore installations before.

Siebel ferries of the Heer and Kriegsmarine had rockets launchers late in the war (1944-1945) for shore bombardments usually in the Baltic Sea area. I know that the Germans never develop and used any big landing ships with plenty of rocket launchers just as the Royal Navy and the US Navy did during WWII.

From Wikipedia source. Z-34 destroyer was the first German ship to fire rockets. That was on March 31,1945. Wikipedia didn't say anything about destruction of enemy planes from surface to air rockets by Z-34. I know that Z-34 was not the first German ship nor the first German destroyer to use surface to air rockets in action at sea. Z-34 was commanded by Kaptlt. Karl Hetz throughout WWII. He was the holder of the German Cross in Gold and the Honor Roll Clasp of the Kriegmarine. Is there any more detailed information about Z-34 that I could look up at? Wikipedia sometimes is unreliable.
