How was power of Engines measured?

#1

Post by johncedwards » 25 Feb 2014, 16:31

Following my question - kindly answered - regarding how the Kriegsmarine measured speed (it was in Knots), can anyone tell me how they measured engine-power. Thus I believe a Type XXI U boat had two diesel engines rated at 4,000 horsepower (3,000 kW). I understand that, but did the Kriegsmarine use horsepower or some metric unit?

Likewise the type XXI had two electric motors rated at 5,000 PS. Could that be Pferdestarke? My guess = German horsepower? Is that the answer to my above question? If so, how does PS convert to horsepower?

With thanks for any assistance

1,3636 PS = 1 kW
