Organization of the German destroyers in September 1939

Hello,

I read contradictory things about the organization of the Führer der Torpedoboote (Konteradmiral Günther Lutjens) at the start of the war.
In particular, the existence of a 3. Zerstörerflottille is not clear to me, neither the subordination of the Z 1 "Leberecht Maass" and Z8 "Bruno Heinemann".

Some sources state that there was such a third destroyer flotilla under Fregattenkäpitan Hans Hartmann, but apparently this flotilla was created only in December 1939. Apparently, aside the 1., 2. and 4. Zerstörerflotillen, there was only the 5. Zerstörerdivision at this time.

Concerning the Z 1, it seems to have been the flagship for the destroyers. But some sources subordinate it to the 2. Zerstörerflotille, while others don't.
Concerning the Z 8, she was apparently subordinated to the 4. Zerstörerflotille in August and in October 1939, but it is difficult to say what was her subordination on the eve of the war.

Can anyone clear all these things up?
Thank you for your help.
Cheers,

hi,

3. Z-Fltl. was formed with the units of 5. Z-Div. (all 1936's, i.e. Z 17 - 22) in, as you did say, December, 1939.

Both Z 1 and Z 8 appear to have belonged to 2. Z-Fltl.

Thank you for your answer Polar Bear.
May I ask you what is your source that states that Z 1 and Z 8 were under 2. Zerstörerflottille in September 1939?
I found several ones that state the same, but other ones disagree.

For instance:
http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Waffen/Z8.htm: "Am 1. November 1938 wurde die Zerstörerwaffe neu gegliedert. "Bruno Heinemann" wurde der 4. Zerstörer-Flottille zugeteilt.

https://books.google.fr/books?id=A5HPBQ ... on&f=false
"The routine exercises in the North Sea and Baltic was continued after she was attached to 4. Z-Flottille on 1 November. Most of pre-war 1939 was spent in the shipyard.
On 30 August 1939 Z8 shadowed the Polish destroyers Grom, Burza and Blyskawica on their flight across the Baltic. After participating in the blockade of Hela at the outbreak of war, she drydocked at Wilhelmshaven until 29 September. [...] During November, as part of 4. Z-Flottille [...]".

--> It seems that the Z 8 "Bruno Heinemann" was with the 4. Zerstörerflottille all along, doesn't it?

http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Waffen/Z1-R.htm: no subordination is given to the Z 1 "Leberecht Maass" until February 1940. The only mention is that she was "Bei Kriegsbeginn am 1.

Is it impossible that Z1 was not part of a flottilla, and Z 8 was under 4. Zerstörerflottille authority at the start of the war?

Cheers,

Based on KTB of FdT from September 1939 the OdB was as follows:
Z1 - was directly assigned to FdT
1. ZD: Z 2, Z 3, Z 4
3. ZD: Z 14, Z 15, Z 16
6. ZD: Z 8, Z 9, Z 11

Hope that helps!
