Hi!

It is not easy finding correct information about the B-Dienst. I am researching this topic for months without satisfying results.

The B-Dienst is a abbreviation for "Beobachtungs-Dienst". The B-Dienst was part of the Naval Intelligence Organisation and was responsible for radio communication intelligence. The XB-Dienst was responsible for deciphering the messages.

Naval Intelligence was part of the "Seekriegsleitung (SKL)". The correct designation was Abt. Marine-Nachrichten-Dienst (MND, 3./SKL), until 1939/1940 when a reorganisation took place. The Dept. was obviously splitted to form the 2nd Dept. (Marine-Nachrichten-Dienst) and the 3rd Dept. (Nachrichten-Auswertung). The latter Dept. was in charge of analysing the results from the Intelligence.

Structure until Dec. 31st, 1939:
OB: Raeder Erich
Chef des Stabes der SKL: Schniewind Otto
1./SKL (Operations): Fricke Kurt
3./SKL (Intelligence): Arps Theodor

Arps led the Dept. since 01.10.1933.

Structure from January 1st, 1940:
OB: Raeder Erich
Chef des Stabes der SKL: Schniewind Otto
1./SKL: Fricke Kurt
2./SKL: ???
3./SKL: ???

On June 16th, 1941 there was a Amtsgruppe (Office Group) Marinenachrichtendienst covering the 2nd and the 3rd Dept. Chief of the Army Group became Vizeadmiral Erhard Maertens (until 05.05.1943). I don´t know if the Office Group was only set up at this date.

I know the last Cdr. of the Amtsgruppe (Office Group). It was KAdm. Fritz Krauss (16.08.1944-08.05.1945). Between Maertens and Krauss I have a gap (unfortunately).

For more information about the personnel see the excellent "Gareth Collins bios" at:

Hi Mino!

Gareth´s bios at

http://www.geocities.com/~orion47/WEHRM ... arine.html

cleared it totally up.

Office Group Leader from 01.05.1943-16.08.1944 was KAdm. Ludwig Stummel, who also led the 2nd Dept. (Marinenachrichtendienst) from 28.12.1939-15.06.1941.

Regards
