In WW2 sGerman ships were equipped with MES (Minen Eigenschutz).
How did this work?

In English this would be termed DeGaussing equipment. During WW II it used electrical coils attached to the hulls of warships which affected the polarity of the ships magnetic field which is generated by the large mass of metal. It did not eliminate the ships magnetic field but lowered it to the point where it did not trigger the Magnetic mines. A similar but cheaper system was the "Wiping" of merchant and less important ships. This consists of dragging a similarly charged cable under a ship to lower the magnetic signature. This measure was only temporary and the ship would slowly regain its original field and need a re treatment.
