Kriegsmarine naval landing party troops

Post by Kriegsmarine99 » 25 Aug 2003 22:47

Looking for information and photos of any Kriegsmarine personnel who would have fought as a naval landing party.

Cheers.

Are you looking for specifics rather than info regarding the Naval Infantry Divisions formed in the latter stages of the war, and the ad-hoc units such as those formed after the Narvik debacle?

I am not looking for so much for information on the large scale unit formations made up like the Coastal Defense Troops, but small scale actions where the average sailor would have been sent on a naval landing party since from my research so far the Kriegsmarine did not have "naval infantry" or "marines" as such.

You are correct in that the KM didn't have the classic US/UK Marine, but in late 1944/45 it formed 3 Naval Infantry Divisions, drawn from KM personnel without ships and shore based personnel.

The most effective was the 2nd which fought in NW Europe against the British in the advance towards Hamburg.

Are there any documented cases of boarding actions in WW2 naval conflict involving the Kriegsmarine?

Hello!

Already in Poland the navy had the so called Marine Stoßtrupp Kompanie which was involved in the capture of the Westerplatte 1939. During Weserübung and some island occupation the MSK was also involved.

Later in the war the unit was wasted as normal ground unit in the northern sector of the East front.

Here a article from my site:

Cheers for that, great website by the way.

Was there a Master-at-Arms type of position on Kriegsmarine vessels? For example, who was in charge of ship's security on a capital class ship like the Bismark?
