On Christoph Awender's WW2 Day by Day site, there's a set of tables labeled as Verluste der Deutschen Handelsmarine 1939 - 1945. Can anyone specify where this information came from?

There is a site 'out there' on Handelsmarine Verluste somewhere - have seen it but cannot find it - go Googling Tiornu

That's interesting. On that web page, you can see the link to Cristoph's web page at the bottom. It's possible that one page used the other as a source, but each has information the other does not, so I'm wondering where the data ultimately comes from.
