On page one the second photo shows the Bismarck and not the Scharnhorst: Bismarck had 4 double turrets, whereas Scharnhost had 3 triple turrets...

Hello to all :D; a little more...............

Sailings abroad.

The Battlecruiser Gneisenau which had been commissioned on May 21, 1938, sailed from Germany to conduct a round of tests in the Atlantic in June 1939. It was probably at this time when she made this visit. The ship was back in Germany when the war began.

A minor quibble about German destroyers- their numbers always started with Z for Zerstorer. Those ships with numbers starting with T were torpedo boats-the equivalent of American destroyer escorts or British sloops and frigates. The Torpedoboote didn't have the speed, tonnage or armament that the Zerstorers had.

hi,

not quite.
The torpedo boats had - true to their name - a strong torpedo armament (2 x 4 tubes) which the USN DE's or the RN sloops and frigates did not have.

You never heard of the US Fletcher class of wartime destroyers? They had 10 torpedo tubes, 2X5.

hi, genstab

I drove one of the Fletchers delivered to the German navy as a Watch officer. But they weren't DE's = Destroyer Escorts which you mentioned before.

Granted, the Fletchers weren't frigates ir torpedo boats. I thought you meant a torpedo boat has more torpedos than a destroyer and was giving the example of a destroyer class that indeed had more torpedo mounts than torpedo boats. Sxrry if I misunderstood you.
