This was the writing on a Japanese sign in New Guinea in WW2. Any help with translation would be appreciated.

I have a techou for a member of a heavy artillery unit, first at Port Arthur, and later at Reisui. HIs specialty was with turrets. Does anyone have information on what a specialty with turrets means? Also, what kind of turrets, if any, did Port Arthur have? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks! Tom

In IJA, there were some turret batteries converted from turrets of battle ships. To operate them, there was a special training (特業) on turret. Trained soldiers were regarded as specialist (特業修業者). There were two kinds of 特業 on turret, 要塞砲塔(Fortress turret) and 要塞砲塔機関(Fortress turret mechanic).

Turret batteries did not exist at Port Arthur or Reisui. So, he did not make use of his specialty.

These are headings from a Japanese article on landing barge units in New Guinea in WW2. Can someone help with translations?

Thanks very much Taki. Amazing photos. I am trying to tell this story in my new book about the battle for Lae. I have also heard these barges called Unpoto. Are you able to translate three more headings for me? Take your time.

I am also interested in it. Would you tell me the title of the Japanese article and the magazine name publishing it.

> I have also heard these barges called Unpoto.

It can be read as Unpoto. But, Unhoto seems correct.

Thanks Taki,
You are a great help as I know from when you sent me the unit history of the 78th Infantry Regiment some years ago.
The translated section headings are from a Maru magazine article about submarine transport operations in Eastern New Guinea. Let me know your email address and I will send you the 16 scanned pages. The last section heading is also attached.
