I wonder what ship this was. Looks like it might be a destroyer.

I think it could be a light cruiser.Note the tripod foremast.

Here's the Tenryu at Shanghai in 1932:

Has anyone any details on the initial NLF--e.g. what ships did they come from?

They came from Tokiwa, Atake, Oi, Yubari, Tatsuta and some destroyers. NLFs also came from naval bases in Japan transporting by IJN warships. So, it is not cartain what ship that was.

It seems the photo could also be Tatsuta the sister ship of the Tenryu but it definately looks like one of the two from the comparison of the photo to the ones on the Wikipedia gallery.

Tatsuta might be the ship in the photo if it was the one landing NLF troops.

This post thread on this site should list the NLF forces landed at Shanghai:

I think your right.I can find no record of the Tenryu being there in 1932.

Thanks for the ship names Taki.

Tigre quoted a figure of 3,600 Japanese dead and wounded at Shanghai in 1932.Does this sound right?

Japanese casualities were about 3,000 men. Detailed numbers are different according to source. One source stated that 769 men were killed and 2,322 men were wounded.
