Translation Requests

In looking at a Type 88 fuze recently, I noticed the kanji combo of 榴臼 on the side. On another forum, it was discussed that it is the abbreviation for "Howitzer-Mortar", which evidently is a term used for the howitzer because of its shorter barrel. I am surprised that such a combination would be used to name essentially a howitzer, particularly when I am finding that howitzer when translated is 榴弾砲. Why use 榴臼 when there is already a kanji combo for howitzer, and just stamp 榴? Is there further information concerning the usage of 榴臼 on the side of the T88 fuze that I am missing? Thanks for any help with this.

榴臼 is the abbreviation for 榴弾砲臼砲(Howitzer, Mortar). There were two versions in Type 88 Fuse. 榴臼 is for howitzer and mortar. 野山加(Field gun, Mountain gun, Cannon) is for other guns.

I was hoping someone could enlighten me on what the black bracketed portion of this IJN sailor document means. Sailor looks to be a member of the 12th Gunboat unit, but I don't know what his position is within that unit. I have most everything else figured out. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!
