The USS Chester was torpedoed by I-176 of the Imperial Japanese Navy. I-176's commander at the time was Commander TanabeYahachi. While commanding the I-168 during the Battle of Midway, he sank the US aircraft carrier USS Yorktown and the destroyer USS Hammann.
