Re: Japanese soldiers' identification tags
Dogtag of the warrant officer Natsume.
Engineer regiment №114, company №1 – I`m not sure, is it right?
And one more question. Does the word junshi (准尉) is equal to the term tokumu souchou (特務曹長)? Or in this case we can use the word kouhei joutou kouchou (工兵上等工長)?

And one more question. Does anybody knows any official IJA documents - service regulations, orders, instructions – there the dogtags are mentioned?

Re: Japanese soldiers' identification tags
Gentlemen, does anybody knows the code "柏4639"?
Re: Japanese soldiers' identification tags
Here is the information i can supply
柏 kashiwa or haku is the unit identifier for the 3 Expeditionary unit until 5/44 then the 52 Division - this would be the unit that 4639 was attached to.
4639 is ID number for the 39th Construction Duty Company - this unit move around during the war and probably ended up with the 52nd Division at Truk

Thank you for information!
Do you know the proper japanese name for the 39th Construction Duty Company?
(Is it 第39建築勤務中隊?) It was Independent Company or the part of any batallion or regiment?

No, it is 建築勤務第39中隊.
> It was Independent Company or the part of any batallion or regiment?
It is the line-of-communication unit under the Army. Usually, it was attached to LoC HQ or Anchorage HQ.

Re: Japanese soldiers' identification tags
Hi - this dog tag was amongst my late father's effects. He was a transport pilot in Burma and I remember him telling me it was given to him by a soldier. Is there any way I can find the family and return it - I did read somewhere about a Japanese web site which helps connect families with lost military personal effects ?

Interested in any detail as well if anyone can help ?
Thanks.

Re: Japanese soldiers' identification tags
Sparky,
the crossed out portion of your tag is for the 16th Inf. Regiment, 2nd Division. The other side of your tag has the units code being 勇(Isamu) and then the number code: 1302 for the 16th Inf. Reg., 2nd Div. I believe the depot code is next:
東23 (Sendai Depot) and then the ind. number for the soldier: 440. Great piece of history!
Concerning returning the tag to the family, I do not believe that this would be possible, especially with the information taken from the tag itself. There would have to be some sort of solid connection between the soldier's ind. number and a record book somewhere connecting the number to a name. A lot of that information has been destroyed or lost to time. Officer tags have the actual name of the soldier which would make it much easier to locate a family. This EM tag however cannot really be researched further as to a name unfortunately. Hope this helps.
