When I was in Mongolia this summer, I saw at 15th august in Ulaanbaatar (Улаанбаатар) on the place of Sukhbaatar a parade of the army remembering Khalkhin Gol.

Here a mongolian website on this battle:

Horrido!

Brilliant collection of photo's. I hold a real fascination for the Nomonhan Conflict - perhaps because it's so poorly covered. The only really good book I have on the subject is "Nomonhan: Japan Against Russia, 1939" by Alvin Coox. And it's somewhat dated.

More than anything else the photo's illustrate just how open and barren was the landscape. Other than small folds and gullies there really wasn't anywhere to hide. Substitute grass plains for baking sands and it could be the Western Desert.

Sorry I missed the parade.
At the time I was travelling back from the battlefield itself - when organising my trip I did not anticipate the national celebrations for the 70th anniversary.
Hopefully I've got the links correct for some of my photos from the battlefield.

If this works I will provide more info & links.
