The latter is mukade kyoso (scolopendra race). In this picture they use bar to fix legs of participants but rope/tube is rather popular today. It is a training of copperative action... I don't know it really contribute to any of their skill. It's a good exhibition anyway.
The following movie is a mukade kyoso by 9th grade students (3rd grade of junior high).
The following movie is a news film on National Defense Academy of Japan. Most of it is devoted to 'Bo Taoshi' match. A team divides themselves into defenders and attackers. Attackers tries to tilt the opposites' bar (and often take something on the top of bar... in NDAJ version the leader himself hangs on the top of bar as the last defender! Bo Taoshi is a traditional popular match in school but is dangerous.

Re: Something different...
Regarding the photos of the eclipse viewing, the event could have been in February of 1943, as there was a total solar eclipse that was visible from northern Japan and Manchuria. http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEsearch/S ... l=19430204
The one problem I have with that is the season does not seem to match well with the way people are dressed.
A much better match is the solar eclipse on September 21st, 1941. Not visible in Japan, but easily visible from much of China, Formosa and Kazahkstan. http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEsearch/S ... l=19410921
That NASA resource is a keeper for anybody who wants to use a real lunar or solar eclipse in fiction.
