Note tbat Type 79 is a wrong designation. It was also called "Renault" in Japanese and FT was designated "Ko Gata" (Model A) and NC was designated "Otsu Gata" (Model B).

Thanks, but I'm searching more specific informations :

— which units were fitted with those tanks ?

— have they been used at war or only for training purposes ?

— what kind of markings could have been used on those tanks ?

I also hope you'll help me to find some pictures/profiles 8-)

Peter, I hope it's OK to reassemble here some others of your Japanese Renault tank photos from the "Something different" thread. Along with hisashi's commentary, they are too deep inside there for easy reference.

At its rear left, note marking and stowage boxes. Is that a small flag atop the boxes?

Note also the two-tone camouflage paint scheme -- is it olive-and-brown?
hisashi wrote:Renault FT was imported in 1925 with Medium Mark A Whippet. Army infantry school raised school tank unit for them, and newly created tank 1st company also received them. They were trial unit to learn everything on the new weapon. Army infantry school itself was a research/education organization educating infantry officers, so it might happen that they gave a lecture for student officers about the latest weapon they had. Later army cavalry school also received FT.

The first Japanese tank sent to a war zone was a Whippet that went to Siberia after 1918?

It is said so up to now. But, recently a new document was found and it stated that they were not Whippet, but Renault FT which were sent to Siberia. So, it should be revised.

Hello, Peter!
According to Russian-language caption, the tanks in the first photo are French and belong to French platoon of the tank company for the protection of Shanghai international settlement.
In any case, thanks for the link! :)

Best regards, Aleks
