Looking for information about Japan's submarine service. Also looking for some good reading material about the I-19(?), the sub that shelled the American west coast and was later sunk.(?)

Regards,
-Mike

Hello.

Try Nihon Kaigun website ( http://www.combinedfleet.com/kaigun.htm ).
Has lot of info about Japanese Imperial fleet during WW2, including info about types of submarines (sadly partially under construction). They are building a page with TROM-s of all submarines, if they have´nt got the I-19 up yet (or You have additional questions) try out the author named Sander Kingsepp who has excellent knowlede on the subject. You can find his e-mail on the Sensuikan! page.

Best Regards,

Mait.

You could do worse than trawl the libraries for "SUNK" by Mochitshura Hashimoto, first published 1955 something. He was the man that sunk the USS Indianapolis, one of the few survivors of the pre-war commanders. The book gives a good overview of their submarine-war.

'Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy, 1869-1945'
by Hansgeong Jentschura, Dieter Jung, and Peter Mickel
from Arms and Armour (London),
ISBN 1-85409-525-0
is highly recommendable. It contains mainly mechanic data.

Hints about any quality technical data available in internet about the submarine classes of the Imperial Japanese Navy (and Army) beside the source I already mentioned in this thread will be warmly welcomed :)

Best Regards,

Mait.

There is a page about the I-19 sub at the Nihon Kaigun website at this link:
http://www.combinedfleet.com/I-19.htm

The I-19 belonged to the B1 submarine class, the most numerous Japanese submarine type of WW2 (http://www.combinedfleet.com/type_b1.htm).
