Not really an answer to your post, but a similar question. Here is a family photo of mine from 1930s Warsawa. Who is the Japanese officer 2nd from the left? All others are known members of my family.

It was taken on my grandparent's balcony in Mokotów, a district of Warsawa.

He is Gen. Genzo Yanagida. The date of the photo is 1934. At that time, he was Lt. Col.

Hi,

It's actually Captain Tadamasa Shimanuki (sometimes referred 'Tadamassa Schimanuki') of the Japanese Army, he studied at the Polish Air Force unit in Torun for few months(March-April) in early 1934, and was frequently visiting Warsaw.

Hi Shingom
I've just seen a group photo of Captain Shimanuki (see: The Inter-War Japanese Military Intelligence Activities in the Baltic States ... on Google)
If the Captain is the third person from the left in the front row in the photo whuch is included in this PDF I must say it doesn't look very much like the above photo. What do you think?
Regards
Ian

Hi Ian (cc: jednastka),

I've noticed the Japanese officer wearing a badge of the Estonian Air Force. (which looks like an intimidating eagle).

Sorry for the bad resolution, but this is the photo taken at the Polish General Staff along with Shimanuki (the left end) and other Japanese officers. You can see he wears the same badge.

P.S. I had misunderstood that you were the one posted the family photo with the Japanese officer. (not the portrait)
My answers will be toward the person who had posted the former photo. Sorry.

Yes, you are right, the characters on the portrait says it's Genzo Yanagida.

Best regards,

Hi jednastka,

There are also couple of different photos of Shimanuki (mostly from his days in Tallinn) in my conference article too.
