 ...yea!

I found what I was looking for:

Kawanishi "Baika" Pulsejet Suicide Attacker
source
http://uk.geocities.com/sadakichi09/nav ... htm#Baika´
Single-seat suicide aircraft. The Baika was a low-wing monoplane, with a pulse-jet engine attached to the tailfin and to a pylon behind the cockpit. The wheels were dropped after take-off. Not built.

Two images from a gun cam of Navy interceptors. In 21st of March 1945, all G4M2s were shot while their mission was to strike with the "Cherry Blossom"

Shooting down count

#18

Post by ChristopherPerrien » 22 Apr 2003, 17:02

Considering how dangerous these Baka bombs could be and the fact it was a piloted aircraft, Does the guy get credit for shooting down one or two airplanes?

I don't think it would count as a plane shot down considering it wasn't launched from the Betty as the images show above, afterall it was "human" bomb.

It just struck me as a possibility, like the crediting of two kills for an observation ballon in WWI.

I suppose you would have to research Naval pilot records to if if maybe this was the case or naval regs.

Another similar example would be shooting down a plane towing a glider?

Another thing

One thing about giving two victories, it would prevent the chance of a pilot "waiting" for it to separate into a glide from its mothership, shooting it down, and then shooting down the mothership which I would assume to be two definite victorie. After all more victories means money, promotions, and medals. Not saying that most pilots would but what about
the one smart/good/independant/etc. type who might have gave it some thought?

Besides gliders the glider question, What about V-1's, I think pilots got credit for them and they defintely did not have a pilot but yet were considered "aircraft.

I think the V-1s were recorded as an a/c shot down, so probably the "cherry blossom" might have been recorded as one too, but I haven't heard of any Navy pilots recording an ohka as a destroyed a/c.

V1's were recorded separately from aircraft kills by the RAF.
The greatest V1 ace was a Sq/Ldr Barry with 67 V1 kills.

The Ohka

#24

Post by JPHN » 02 Feb 2004, 17:19

I heard that the Ohka was an aircraft, powered by a rocket, that is used to crash-bomb targets (like the kamikaze). It was said that it was so fast that AA guns couldn't bring it down before it crashes. Did this aircraft really exist? Does anybody have photos of it?

Actually, I just saw one last year at the adjunct museum of (oh, what is it called?)--the one in Chino, California. This is at the town before you get to the Grand Canyon.

Did Hitler or Goering train pilots for potential Fi 103R combat missions to fight and die for Nazi Germany, similar to Ohka pilots being trained to die for Imperial Japan?
