A photo of A6M2 taking off from carrier Zuikaku
Hi,
At a Finnish military journal there was this photo (I believe from this source too), mentioning the photo was taken during the Pearl Harbor attack:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifth_Carrier_Division
Is the photo of EII-111 from 1941, or from 1942, as it is mentioned for example here:
http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~un3k-mn/ren-zuikaku.htm
http://japanese-aviation.forumeiros.com ... to-23-1942
http://bowshrine.com/new-guinea-during-world-war-ii/
Regards, Juha

The source of Wikipedia seems to be at page 70 from this book:
https://www.amazon.co.jp/%E6%97%A5%E6%9 ... 4478950563
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifth_Car ... u_zero.jpg
Can anyone confirm/deny it?
...and/or give any additional information about the case?
Regards, Juha

Re: A photo of A6M2 taking off from carrier Zuikaku
Thank you very much.
So, have I understood correctly that the photo is from the Rabaul raid era?

Yes, that would be correct.
The same photo is in the AJ Press Monografie Morskie #3 Shokaku/Zuikaku pg.9 - But, they have the date as January 21, 1942.

Thanks again, Takao.
So, seems that quite safe bet would be to name that photo to have been taken during Rabaul-Lae operation(s)?
That would then be the time of operation against Lae?Takao wrote:Yes, that would be correct.

Yes, I am certain that is quite a safe bet.

The photo is also in Samouraï sur Porte-Avions, which says that it was taken on 22 January and that the Zero was taking off for an attack against Rabaul. The source is given as Yoshikazu Sato.

Thank you.
I other words, am I correct that seemingly nothing except wikipedia/wikipedia based sources backs up the Pearl Harbor attack theory?

Re: A photo of A6M2 taking off from carrier Zuikaku
AFAIK, I have seen the photo used many times, IIRC, one or two may have attributed it to the Pearl Harbor attack, bit I cannot remember which one or two. But, I would agree that the sources on the internet that attribute it to Pearl Harbor will be Wikipedia-based.

Thank you Takao.
I think that I will contact the journal and post there a link to this discussion
