Re: Japanese Division Code Names
Thanks Fontessa for adding the Air Divisions Code Names.
Note: The Depot Divisions did not have Code Names as they were baisically holding formations for replace-
ments and had the number of the active formation that was overseas.

Re: Japanese Division Code Names
Continuing on my old thread as I am back with a question regarding code names again. Does anyone have any ideas about the meaning of
hokuetsu 北越 for the 229th Division? The Kanji breakdown comes out as 北 hoku meaning north and 越 etsu meaning surpass, crossover,
move to. Hokuetsu may have been a town, village, or area at one time as there is an express train line with the name. There was a Hokuetsu
war. There is also a book with the title that translates as snow country. This is the translation I'm leaning towards as the division was formed
in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. This would seem to tie in with Wellgunde's previous earlier post: 229 Hokuetsu 北越 Uonuma area of Japan's
old Echigo Province, a place known for its long winters and deep snow. Any thoughts?

Re: Japanese Division Code Names
Hello wdgysin,
Fukui and Ishikawa prefectures were called 越前 Echizen. Ishikawa Prefecture, where the 229th Division was formed, is on the 北 north side of 越前.
I guess it is the reason the 兵団文字符 Unit Code Letter of 229th Division was 北越.
