So-To gun carrier

#1

Post by Kikiribukiriki » 30 May 2017, 19:12

Ive been researching on the So-To 37mm gun carrier for a while, although I wasnt able to find much info about it, however there a couple representations which seem to be used by many:

(this one seems to be based more on the Ki-To AA carrier)

Personally the first representation would make more sense, since the driver's and machinegun hatch might act as a bump to prevent the 37mm AT gun from sliding forward or to the sides while on hills or when moving fast, maybe even to further protect the gun crew that are standing behind, however Im not entirely sure, any suggestions would be appreciated,

thx.

Four So-To were built and sent to China. But, they all had broken down until they reached the front and did not see action. So-To was not produced any more.

Above pictures of So-To are not correct. I upload its drawings. AT gun was slid backward and landed at ground.

Hi.

This is Ki-To 2 cm aa-gun carrier which used a similar carrier vehicle:

It had small additional armour plates on each side of the gun behind the gun/drivers armour extension. It would make sense if So-To would have had them, too, to stabilise the gun to the sides during driving.

As written on the page I uploaded, So-To has two rails and stoppers to hold AT-Gun. So, it did not need these plates.

Hi.

1. It looks like the gun mounting on the vehicle wasn´t too stable. Are there any reports of the firing results during test trials, especially regarding fire results and damage on the guns or the mounts on the vehicle?

2. There seem to be a hook on the rear of the vehicle. Was the gun transported on or behind the vehicle during longer marches?

I don't know.

37mm AT gun was designed to be drawn by horse and it was prohibited to be drawn by motor vehicle. So, the carrier was necessary to transport it by motor vehicle. Two types of carrier were developed and So-To is one of them. Another is 九四式37耗砲機動運搬車(Type 94 37mm AT gun mobile carrier) as shown below. AT gun was mounted on it and drawn by tractor.
