Officer's School?

#1

Post by ijnfleetadmiral » 22 Aug 2017, 07:41

According to The Naval Database, KAMIKAWA MARU Gunnery Officer (appointed 15 October 1940) LCDR ARUGA Bunkichi was a graduate of the 1st Class of a place that translates as 'Solider's College'. Japanese kanji reads as 兵専. Anyone know what school this is? TIA for any info!

Hello ijnfleetadmiral,

Probably 兵専 is incorrect. I think 兵選 is correct. 兵選 was the abbreviation of 海軍兵学校選修学生 Naval Academy Elective Course Trainee. The Elective Course carried out officer education of one year for chosen noncommissioned officers in Naval Academy. The graduate was promoted to a special duty officer. This system began in 1920. Therefore, LCDR ARUGA Bunkichi graduated in 1921.

The below is the list of Naval Academy Elective Course Trainee.

A class listing? SWEET! Thanks so much! A few questions:

1) What were the promotion times for Special Duty officers? Example: the usual Eta Jima path shows that someone who graduated in 1921 would probably have been a CDR by 1938. So for ARUGA Bunkichi it would be like so:

Graduated Special Duty Course, commissioned ENS - unknown month, 1921 (I use ENS as IIRC only Academy graduates held the rank of Midshipman)
LTJG - 1923? (normal two years Time In Grade)
LT - 1926-27 (normal three to four years TIG)
LCDR - 1932-35 (maximum of eight years TIG)

Thoughts?

2) I found an officer named AIZAWA Kitaichi (相沢 喜多一) in Special Duty Class 3. I have in my records an AIZAWA Kitakazu, who was KIA as Operations Officer of NISSHIN on 22 July 1943. Are these the same individuals?

3) What's the English translation for the following names?

元 恵熊 (Special Duty Class 3)
宮山定了 (Special Duty Class 6) family name MIYAYAMA
板橋音丸 (Special Duty Class 7) family name ISHIBASHI
水永 巳子男 (Special Duty Class 7) family name MIZUNAGA
伊賀 上謙蔵 (Special Duty Class 9)
北永繁喜 (Special Duty Class 9)

I think promotion was slower than a regular officer for a special duty officer. There are only 3 special duty officers promoted to CDR. As for ARUGA Bunkichi, he was still LTJG in 1930.

Special Duty Officers promoted to CDR:
壇原袈裟由 DANHARA Kesato: LCDR (15 November 1938) / CDR (1 May 1944)
三沢千一 MISAWA Sen’ichi: LCDR (15 November 1940) / CDR (15 October 1944)
酒井常十 SAKAI Tsuneju: LCDR[Eng.] (15 November 1939) / CDR[Eng.] (15 October 1944)

Yes they were the same person.

板橋音丸: ITABASHI Otomatu
水永巳子男: MIZUNAGA Mineo
伊賀上謙蔵: IGA ??? (I can’t read the first name.)
北永繁喜: KITANAGA Shigeyoshi

Awesome...thanks! A couple questions:
1) Were there separate courses for Special Duty Engineers and Paymasters, or was there just one course for all Special Duty Officers?

2) I have an officer from Class 15 named IIZUKA Riichi (or IIZUKA Tomokazu). The kanji for his name is: 飯塚利一. Was this the same officer as IIZUKA Tomokichi, who was KIA as CO of kaibokan SHONAN on 25 February 1945?

Here are a few more names:
松本 太四郎 (Special Duty Class 12) family name MATSUMOTO
宮永栄熊 (Special Duty Class 12) family name MIYANAGA
完田 一 (Special Duty Class 13)
規家作太 (Special Duty Class 15)

ARUGA and another individual - AIZAWA Kitaichi (Class 3) achieved the rank posthumously. Both were KIA when NISSHIN was sunk on 22 July 1943, ARUGA as Gunnery Officer and AIZAWA as Operations Officer.

I think there was the separate course for Special Duty Engineers and Paymasters.

No, the Kanji for IIZUKA Tomokichi was 飯塚倶吉. He was a reserve officer, not a special duty officer.

I meant "While living, only 3 special duty officers promoted to CDR."

Thanks for the translations!

Ah. I don't suppose you know of a website listing the graduates of that course? Or even a website listing the graduates of the Engineer and Paymaster Academies?

Hello ijnfleetadmiral,

Both Engineers and Paymasters Schools had special duty officer courses. But the register doesn't exist on the web. Graduate's register at those schools doesn't exist on the web, too.
