The No. 71 submarine was an experimental ship. Her CO was not appointed because she was dismantled without being incorporated into the fleet.

She was categorized as not a gunboat, but a 雑役船 Miscellaneous Ship (Etajima Training Ship). So normal crew was not appointed.

Awesome...thanks! Question:

Who was in command of TAIHO's 3 D4Y1 reconnaissance aircraft? Were they with the other carrier bombers under LT HIRAHARA Masao (66), or did they have someone else in charge? If it was someone else, any idea who it was, and did they survive the battle?

I would like to emphasize that they belonged not to Taiho, but to 601st Naval Air Group in the air-land separation system. LT Fukai Shizuo 深井静夫 (64) was the Hikotaicho of 601st Naval Air Group Reconnaissance Branch, which had D4s, B6s, B5s and dispatched them to three aircraft carriers. 6 pairs for 3 D4s seemed to be dispatched to Taiho and a FWO was the most senior NCO. At last, 3 pairs were MIA with their D4s.

Hans Lengerer & Sumie Kobler-Edamatsu published a very detailed article in the German publication "Marine Rundschau" in August 1983 about the No-71 Submarine. He mentions that during open sea trials the boat rolled about 40 degrees and the whole crew suffered severe sea-sickness and vomiting except for the "Captain, the Chief Engineer and Lt.Cdr Tominaga Hideo (he was one of the designers)" who did not vomit.
My point is that there was a captain appointed even though the boat was not incorporated in the IJN as you correctly pointed out.
regards Steve.

Thanks for the comment.
No. 71 was a trial submarine, so the persons who Lengerer & Sumie Kobler-Edamatsu says "Captain" and "the Chief Engineer", I think, were an "officer performed Captain's job" and an “officer performed Chief Engineer's job”. Though the intention of the authors to use the words "Captain" and "the Chief Engineer" is unknown. In another word, I'm skeptical that they have confirmation. I think they were her "Test Pilots". No.71 was completed in Kure Naval Yard Torpedo Factory on 21 August 1938 and was designated as confidential. At least no one was appointed the Captain and the Chief Engineer of No.71 submarine between June and August 1938. So I think the appointments of her "Captain" and "the Chief Engineer" were conducted in the form of such as “Attached to Kure Naval Yard”, “Attached to Kure Naval Distinct”, etc. For example, equipping officers of Yamato was attached to Kure Naval Distinct on the document for confidentiality.

Thank you fontessa, I think you are correct, some one from the Kure Naval Yard was appointed officer to perform the Captain's job and an officer to perform the Chief Engineer's job. Who they were we will never know.
Regards Steve.
