Apologies for having to abb the word Japanesse to Jap, subject length limited the wording.
Again this formation was considered elite and was also tabled for involvement in the Invasion of Midway in 1942.
Does anyone have any OoB or ToE and any other information regarding this unit?
Andy
Looking for info on the Jap 2nd Combined Naval Landing Force
Unfortunately with Japanese OoBs you need to do a bit of detective work and sort out the facts on the formations involved. The AWM website, fairly recently, carried a joint Australian-Japanese Research Project page but its now down.
Ichiki Detachment--US Army Monograph 1949 Guadalcanal:The First Offensive
Midway Landing Group--USMC Monograph 1948 Marines at Midway
You should be able to still find these on the web...but even then you need to scan the narrative on the Japanese forces involved.
Consider another case of properly identifying the Oob of another famous Japanese unit, the South Seas Detachment(Nankai Shitai).
Horii fielded "16,000 men of … (the) elite South Seas detachment (who) struck out across the Owen Stanley mountains for Port Moresby, a prize that had eluded them in the battle of the Coral Sea..."(Ronald H Spector, ‘Eagle Against The Sun"). Horii’s forces are also described as, "a reinforced division of 16,000 men nearly all combat troops"(Dan Van Der Vat, "The Pacific Campaign"). Certainly in the withdrawal and, until half way through their advance, Australians were "seriously outnumbered" (Eric Bergerud, "Touched with Fire").
The truth on the South Seas Detachment...the detached 144th Regiment of the Japanese 55th Division(operating in Burma 1942) that captured Guam and Rabual in 1941/42.It then fought in the Kokoda Trail campaign with the attached 5th Sasebo SNLF,still overall an effective total force but only around 10,000 men and not anything equivalent to a 16,000 man division.
