From reading commander memories the would surface to use their guns for small craft not worth a torpedo. Seems an oppty. to use a Q.ship.

The British gave up on the idea and completed the last n number of specially designed Flower class Q ships as escorts.

I was thinking Q.ship in WW2 only useful if in very shallow waters as in the area off the Malay Peninsula or a very small vessel which a submarine would not want to use a torpedo. This Q.ship was a torpedo worthy target. Then of course, perhaps by the time it was commissioned the IJN was desperate to use any vessel for ASW. As I read here or somewhere, the Japanese would mount DCs on almost any vessel.
