Agano/Oite survivors

#1

Post by IANHULKMCLEOD » 23 Nov 2018, 18:18

Hi Fontessa
How do you know that Cmdr Sakauchi and Captain Matsuda were rescued by the Oite and killed in it`s sinking also you have the Paymaster Sakaguchi and the Navigator Shinbori as survivors had they too been rescued by the Oite and survived her sinking as well or were rescued by CH 28 as I suspect?
You have the Surgeon Abe as dying from wounds on the 19/02/1944 same question applies.
Kind regards Ian

AGANO was hit at 1644 on 16 February 1944 by SKATE and she didn't sink until 0517 the following morning, so her crew had ample time to evacuate. All AGANO survivors were KIA when OITE was sunk save for Navigator LCDR SHINBORI Masao (61), but he was subsequently KIA as Navigator of UNRYU.

Hi Fleetadmiral
Thanks for responding if all the Agano survivors were killed when the Oite was sunk then how can you account for the Navigator and Paymaster surviving! Curious as to what sources you and Fontessa used?
Kind regards Ian

Not all AGANO survivors were KIA...notice I said 'save for' Navigator LCDR SHINBORI Masao (61). I have Paymaster LT SAKAGAMI Shizuhiro as KIA when OITE was sunk.

I know SHINBORI was later KIA as Navigator of UNRYU. Did ABE or SAKAGAMI survive the war?

I don't have any wartime Torpedo Officers from OITE. The last Torpedo Officer I have for her is Special Duty LTJG TSUJIMATSU Munechika (Spec. Duty 15), who was appointed 15 October 1940 and was subsequently reassigned at an unknown date.

I would imagine that whoever he was, he was among those KIA, seeing as how all the other senior officers from OITE were lost with their ship.

Medical Officer ABE Tadamitsu 阿部忠光 was appointed Medical Officer of 541st Naval Air Group. I checked Naval Transfer and Promotion Lists. According to it, 阿部忠光 was attached to 541st Naval Air Group on 15 March 1944. (Not Medical Officer.)
The TROM also says:
Supply Officer SAKAGAMI Shizuhiro 坂上静弘 was attached to Kure Naval Distinct on 20 March 1944. After that he was attached to Yokosuka Naval Distinct (Dispatch to the Military Affairs Bureau.).

I would like to check 元海軍士官名簿 (昭和28年03月) Former Navy Officers List (March 1954) at Yasukuni Shrine Kaiko Bunko Library. If I am lucky it records the date of the death of them.

I think the Torpedo Officer of AGANO was vacant.

I think he survived the sinking.

I went to Yasukuni Shrine Kaiko Bunko Library yesterday. Unfortunately 元海軍士官名簿 didn’t say about the date of death of ABE and SAKAGAMI. I guess they survived the war from their position after the surviving of AGANO sinking.
