Monetary notations within award documents, etc.

#1

Post by shidan » 25 May 2019, 00:10

I am hoping someone can help me understand the amounts of money awarded to soldiers/sailors in award docs. and the entries within techou/rirekihyou. For example, I am studying a sailor award document (Meiji 27) that has the following amount awarded:

一金一圓

I see it as "1 gold, 1 yen"

Is this a correct reading of the above, and if so, what would the soldier actually receive physically? I understand that the currency situation in Japan was somewhat complicated during the Meiji era with gold backed and silver backed currency. Would it be possible to match this to today's currency, whether it be Yen or USD, adjusting it for inflation?

Thank you for any help.

一金 is not "1 gold", but means amount. So, it is 1 yen.

1 yen in Meiji era is equivalent to approx. 3,800 yen nowadays.
