Maya Found!

A research ship Pettrel, owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, found a sunken Maya at a depth of 1850m off Palawan Island, the westernmost tip of the Philippines. She was struck by the torpedo attack of US Gato class submarine Dace (USS Dace, SS-247) at 6:30 am on October 23, 1944, at Palawan Waterworks, and four torpedoes hit the port. The sinking time was 7: 05, and the sinking point was 09 ° 27'N, 117 ° 23'E.

She's in remarkable condition, especially given the fact she was hit by four torpedoes and the patrol report by Dace's Captain described 'continuous breaking-up noises' as 'the worst sound I've ever heard'. The torpedo hit in the forward chain locker more than likely blew off the portion of the bow that lies upside-down off the port quarter. Glad to see the rest of her landed upright. We've had remarkable luck with IJN cruiser wrecks as of late; JINTSU, FURUTAKA, and now MAYA have all been found upright and in good condition.

Atago sunk nearby. I expect that will be found next as Maya was hit 18 minutes or so later.
