Type 92 tankette - did it exist

#1

Post by gebhk » 08 Jul 2019, 23:36

Tomczyk in his book on Japanese tanks describes a Type 92 tankette designed 1931-32. To be clear this is not the Cavalry 'heavy armoured car' Type 92 but a vehicle very similar to the Type 94 but lighter despite thicker armour and with some minor differences including wheel design, turret fittings and exhaust. In his view the Type 94 was a development of this earlier vehicle.

I have found no other references to this earlier vehicle. Did Tomczyk get his wires crossed?

Best wishes

Type 92 tankette means Cavalry 'heavy armoured car' Type 92. Type 92 is sometimes referred as tankette.

Alas, the vehicle described and presented in photographs and drawings by Tomczyk is not the 'Heavy Armoured car' Type 92.

In that book, there are many mistakes. The vehicle titled Type 92 tankette in that book is actually a prototype of Type 94 Tankette.

Thanks, that is exactly the vehicle described.

My apologies, I do not read Japanese. Does your source say when this particular prototype vehicle was designed and built and by whom?

Many thanks, K.

I think he is confusing Type 94 TK prototype with different model. Type 92 and Type 94 on photos in his book are, essentially, the same vehicles with few differences.

The prototype of Type 94 was built by TGE (later Hino) in 1933.
