Uniform Question

Post by ijnfleetadmiral » 15 Aug 2019 16:29

Here's our first look at RADM Yamaguchi Tamon, as portrayed by Asano Tadanobu, from the upcoming film about Midway. I don't know how accurate Yamaguchi's uniform is; I can't recall ever seeing a coat like that in any photos. Perhaps someone who knows more about the uniforms can shed some light?

The unbuttoned coat looks strange, it's just that
Japanese uniforms in war movies are usually accurate

That's a fake for filming. Too fashionable. Above all, IJN did not employ trench coats.

I said "trench coats". The coat used by IJN was not a trench coat.

The below is the sketch of 日本海軍軍装図鑑 IJN Dress Illustration Book for the naval coat. The model was LTJG of Supply Branch attached to 2nd Fleet HQ. Please compare the size of the collar. The real collar was small.

I have doubts about the photo of Yamaguchi Tamon uploaded earlier. Can a commander of operating unit (2nd Air Squadron) visit an army facility for a meeting? I think that is the job of the staff officer of the naval general staff.

The below is a scene from Disney's “Pearl Harbor”. It’s the scene of a "fleet strategy meeting", they say so.
尊皇 Son’no: Honor the emperor
皇國 Kokoku: Emperor country
勇戰 Yusen: Brave fight
I hope that Emmerich's "Midway" does not have such nonsense.
