Anyone know anything about these two characters during the Russo-Japanese War?

Rafael de Nogales Méndez:

"In 1904 participated in the Russo-Japanese War as double agent."
source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafael_de ... %C3%A9ndez

"He ... was a volunteer in the Russo-Japanese War in 1904 (where he was wounded)..."
source: page 94, 'The Beauty And The Sorrow: An intimate history of the First World War' by Peter Englund.

"He frequented the European nobility circles and, during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), from Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing, he worked as a spy for Japan."

Sam Dreben:

"Mustered out in 1902, he took a succession of unsatisfactory jobs, including an attempt to fight for the Japanese in the Russo-Japanese War"
source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Dreben

Anyone know about Dreben's attempt? Was he simply turned down? What about Méndez, any details on what exactly he was doing for the Japanese in China, and where was he wounded?

The only foreigners I know who worked with the Japanese during the Russo-Japanese War were the honghuzi bandits in Manchuria, and some Polish revolutionaries in Europe. Were there any others?
