And I suppose you're all aware of just how little actual authority the Emperor wielded in Japan? He was a symbolic, albeit respected, figure-head of the state. No more. Yet he wanted to apologise to his people, for losing a war he had little to no part in starting or running. I have great respect for such a man. I have no respect for the Japanese war-machine of WW2, but Hirohito deserves respect.
