IJA Division names

#1

Post by Herve75 » 08 Mar 2020, 10:05

Hi everyone.

I'm new here and currently modding for HOI3 Blackice Group.
I'm looking for some correct designations/transcriptions of Japanese Divisions in "romanji" for an OOB rework. Fact is I can't read Japanese and I found many various maner to design these divisions with latin-Alphabet.
Exemples: for a standard infantry division - 1st Infantry Division - I can find:

- wikipedia
Dai-ichi Shidan (Dai-1 Shidan)
this division has the call sign "Jade" (Jade Division - Gyoku-heidan)

- current designation in Blackice for HOI3 is
"Hohei Dai 1 'Jade' Shidan" were "Hohei" means "Infantry".

- designation in HOI4 is
"1 'Jade' Hohei Shidan"

I would like to make the more complete and accurate designation.
Thanks for any reply!

"Hohei Shidan" is wrong. It is only Shidan as stated in Wiki. Wiki is correct.

Tanks Taki,

So proper naming for this division should be "1 'Jade' Shidan" or "Dai-1 'Jade' Shidan" or something else?

It should be Dai-ichi Shidan. Jade (Gyoku) is code sign. It is not included in proper name.

Once again, thanks for your answer.

Now my issue is that for game purpose, that kind of name won't be easy to read/identify for non-japanese speakers.
Maybe I'll go on something like "Dai-ichi Shidan (1st Division 'Jade')"...

Or just call them by their numerical designations.

Also, in at least one case a division was referred to by the name of the city it was raised - the 2nd Division (Sendai Division).

EDIT: I'm vaguely familiar with HOI3 - one of the weaknesses of that game is that divisions are way too small and their layout is ahistorical. Plus armies have no sense of "division slice:" not just the division's own personnel but also corps, army-level, and rear-area troops behind them. An American "division-slice," for example, was about 35,000 to 50,000 men.
