Japanese planes misidentified as Amelia Earhart's Electra

I know that for years, there were conspiracy theories that Amelia Earhart disappeared because she and her navigator were captured by the Japanese and brought to Saipan or another Pacific island chain to be held in Japanese captivity, but I read on Wikipedia that the Tachikawa Ki-70 was used by aviation historians to refute claims about Amelia Earhart being held in captivity by Japanese forces on Saipan. Does anyone have references that talk about US servicemen on Saipan mistaking the Ki-70 or the Kawasaki Ki-56 for the Lockheed Electra flown by Amelia Earhart? For one thing, some living US servicemen who fought in Saipan in WW2 may have conceded that they mistook twin-tailed Japanese transport and reconnaissance planes on Saipan for the plane flown by Amelia Earhart.
