Fontessa, thanks very much for this. I'm a little puzzled by one aspect, however:

Hiryu’s Zero pilots claimed to have destroyed 21 enemy aircraft, including 2 which were unconfirmed (“not sure”):

12 Hurricanes (including 2 shared with Akagi’s Zeros)
1 Spitfire
8 Swordfish

This adds up to 21, but only 1 of the 2 unconfirmed claims is identified. Is there no indication as to whether the 2nd unconfirmed claim was for a Hurricane, a Swordfish or the Spitfire?

Thanks again,

Rob

Hello Fontessa,

this is Peter's reply to your latest posts regarding the sinking of the destroyer Kuretake:

“Many thanks for this additional information. I’ve changed references in the published TROMs from Kurogane to Tetsu for 10th Division and 10th Infantry Regiment- presume the latter is correct.

The identity of Enoshima Maru 江ノ島丸is definitely correct. The ship was a 2A standard ship built by Mitsubishi Jukogyo at Kobe as yard number 675 for NYK and completed 12/43. The Official number was 50610 and gross tonnage was 6933.

It’s very useful to know the 10th Division travelled on Enoshima Maru, Kenzui Maru and Daii Maru and that these ships can be confirmed in TAMA-36. It would be useful to know if you have any idea what troops Brazil Maru and Encho Maru carried and what the Army records show as to departure times? As already advised I think all these ships sailed together initially as well as Juichisei Maru (Hoshi Maru No.11) that carried army equipment not troops and went to Aparri as well as Enoshima Maru.

With regards to the movements of the small auxiliary subchasers and picket boats after Kuretake’s sinking some were already at sea and some were in port. For example Showa Maru No.2, Kochi Maru and Kiyo Maru departed Port Sanpioquinto, 29th December at 1500 and arrived at Takao the following day (30/12) and then presumably left (except Showa Maru No.2) to assist in search for Kuretake’s survivors and to hunt USS Razorback. It is unclear if these ships were escorting any vessel, and if so what was the vessel.”

Regards,

Berend.

I suspect she didn’t carry 10th Division, if we accept Enoshima Maru TROM;
- She departed Takao on unclear dato and arrived at サブタン Sabtang Island (Bashi Channel) on December 14th
- She departed サブタン Sabtang Island (Bashi Channel) on December 16th and arrived at Takao on December 29th
The 1st picuture shows the outline of Enoshima Maru on the same Web Page. From it I can say that we are discussing about the same "Enoshima Maru". The 2nd picture shows Enoshima Maru TROM and it shows she was 2A standard ship completed on 20 December 1943. The problem is whether or not to accept the move of late December, which is shown in blue. Of course this could be a typo.

Unfortunately I can’t find any relation between 10th Division and them.
The below is the transportation detail of 10th Division that I have learned so far.

- 2nd Battalion / 10th Field Artillery Regiment
- 10th Engineer Unit
- Others
大威丸 Daii Maru
- 63rd Infantry Regiment Main Force (Incleding 63rd Infantry Regiment I fantry Gun Company)
- 4th Company / 2nd Battalion / 10th Transport Regiment
- Others
乾端丸 Kenzui aru
- 39th Infantry Regiment Main Force
- 2nd Battalion / 10th Infantry Regiment
- 3rd Battalion / 63rd Infantry Regiment
- Part of 10th Field Artillery Regiment
- 10th Transport Regiment Main Force
- Others
江ノ島丸 Enoshima Maru
- 10th Infantry Regiment Main Force
- Part of 10th Field Artillery Regiment
- Automobile Company / 10th Transport Regiment
- Draft Horse Company / 10th Transport Regiment
- Others (Including 10th Division Ordnance Duty Unit)

The below War Diary shows Infantry Gun Company / 63rd Infantry Regiment was carried by 大威丸.

The number of ships that departed is not clear. The author seems to think the 2 tankers are the Enoura and Brazil Maru. If not there were 4 ships but the author then continues mentioning 3 ships were being escorted.
I asked the author and got the answer;
“3 ships” was typo and 4 ships “Enoura Maru, Blazil Maru and two Tankers” is correct.

Questions for confirmation.
Do you need the names of the officers wounded?
If so, there is no record about them.
(It may be true to assume that an officer with a long time to the next appointment had been injured.)

Before that, I would like to make one correction.

I depended on 渡辺博 WatanabeHiroshi’s TROM for his fate. It says that 中村普吉 was attached to Yokosuka Naval Distinct on 22 February 1945. This transfer should be listed in 横須賀鎮守府辞令公報 Yokosuka Naval Distinkt Jirei Koho , so I checked it. But could find nothing. So中村普吉 didn’t survive the Ume sinking. I would like to correct as the below;

For several officers, I checked personnel changes for major officers.
When an officer leaves a post, he usually takes the next post designated on the same day as 吉田正義 and 梶間健次郎. If for some reason such as treatment in hospital, the officer couldn't work in the next post immediately, he was temporarily attached to 鎮守府 Naval Distinct as 中島晋. From my experience so far, I think “attached to Naval Distinct” is at most 2 - 3 months. In the case of 中島晋, it reachs to 6 months. This is clearly too long and it's acceptable to assume that he was one of 4 wounded Officers and NCOs.
