trying to sort "Shonan Maru's"

#1

Post by rjl3 » 04 Mar 2022, 02:03

Not counting the numbered Auxiliaries such as Shonan Maru # 6, there were 7 un-numbered Shonan Maru's.

1 is unaccounted for : 1931 / 417 tons.

1 was lost in 1942: 1918 / 5,356

1 was lost in 1943: 1943 / 522

So there were still 4 running around in 1944. All 4 were lost in 1944.

Can anyone help with which of these were in the following convoys:

Tarakan to Balikpapen. 22 March 1944 with PB 102 and CH 4.

TASA 13 departing Takao 24 March 1944.

TAMA 16 departing Takao 15 April 1944.

MOMA 02 and TAMA 21C departed Miike 6 July 1944.

If you have access to the Kanji that would be most helpful!

Thanks,
Ralph

Tom!
Thank you for your reply. Actually I have detailed info for all the Shonan Maru's. I am trying to find out WHICH Shonan Maru was in WHICH convoy of the ones listed in my post.
The possibilities are
照南丸 the 417 tons unaccounted for
昭南丸 this was name for both the 5,401 ton and the 5,859 ton
勝南丸 this was name for the 1,029 tanker
昌南丸 this was name of 1,120 cargo ship

Hi Fontessa,

I cannot read Japanese but I visit TokusetsuKansen nearly every day. I have learned to 'pick out' names of ships, some places, and significant events such as on patrol, convoy, detach, repairs, etc.

The following convoys included a Shonan Maru (no numbers) but no tonnage or Kanji is shown, Romanji only. I am trying to determine which Shonan was in each convoy:

Tarakan to Balikpapen. 22 March 1944 with PB 102 and CH 4.

TASA 13 departing Takao 24 March 1944.

TAMA 16 departing Takao 15 April 1944.

MOMA 02 and TAMA 21C departed Miike 6 July 1944.

Fontessa,
Many many thanks! That is the information that I was exactly looking for.

Unfortunately as often occurs looking into Japanese WW2 shipping, one question solved brings up a new question!

Neither of the 2 different 昭南 Shonan Marus' could have been in the convoy departing Tarakan on 22 March. One 5,859 tons had just departed Otaru for Paramushiro and the other 5,401 tons had just departed Takao for Moji. The only possibility that I can think of is that this ship is actually Shonan Maru #1 which was in the area throughout this period escorting convoys to Macassar and around the area. I have seen occasions where the "No 1" is sometimes omitted.

I confirmed the above with her TROM edited by IJN.

Thank you again! This is exactly the type of information I need to enter data into my database. Looks like possibly from JACAR? If so can you please let me know the JACAR Reference Codes?
Thanks,
Ralph

JACAR changed the file reading system. It became more difficult to know the reference codes. (Extremely annoying.)
Below is pdf files. Can you read them?
