Shonan Maru class of Sub Chaser

#1

Post by Fatboy Coxy » 05 Sep 2022, 22:28

Hi All, I'm trying to verify the details on the Shonan Maru class Sub Chaser's, please correct me where I am wrong

They were built as Whaling ships, a class of 13, built between 1938 and 1940, for the Nippon Suisan K.K, a whaling company. They were all requisitioned by the Imperial Japanese Navy, 1940-41, the last few while being built.

350-355 Grt, 133 feet long, steam turbine, oil fired is presumed, single screw, maximum speed 14 knots. They were all called Shonan Maru, no's 1,2,3, then 5,6,7, 8, then 10,11,12, then 15,16,17.

Armament was one Type 41 3-inch (76 mm) naval gun (although also known as a 8 cm/40 3rd Year Type naval gun), two single 96 Type 25 mm Machine Guns, one 94-Type Projector (depth charge thrower), two depth charge racks, 12 depth charges, one hydrophone.

Later the 3-inch gun was replaced by a single Type 93 13mm machine gun, possibly to improve sea keeping qualities, or allowing more depth charges to be carried.

Used as escort ships for convoy's I am unable to say how successful the class was.

It seems that at least Shonan Maru No.16 worked a lot in convoy escorts in the East China Sea.

And AKA do a kit, see https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182752724700

Wouldn't fancy manning that bow gun in any kind of a sea!
