In the spring of 1945 US B-29 bomber raids faced very little opposition from Japanese fighters. Most of the Japanese fighters were held back, waiting for the invasion that did not come. USAAF fighter units with P-51 Mustangs and P-47 Thunderbolts could then be released from escort duty and instead carry out raids and strafe targets of opportunity. Even on august 15th the day of surrender and six days after the second atom bomb was dropped, P-51s´ flew strafe missions over Japan. Footage from the strafing fighters compiled in my video https://youtu.be/6qV8_jprevs
