Yes, and one would expect there to be a LOT less to salvage if the torpedo had actually exploded while attached.

Doesn't mean the Warhead Detonated

remember their torpedoes had highly compressed Oxygen fuel for the engines, the oxygen tank was almost the same length as the warhead itself in the type 91 model 2. a Hit detonating the oxygen tank would have been slightly less catastrophic than the Warheads HE filler.

The Type 91 ran on compressed air. It was the Type 93 (surface ships) and Type 95 (submarines) that ran on oxygen.

Lt Lewis Sanders damaged Soryu Zero [Lt Iyozo Fujita]
IJN loses were 55 airmen and 29 planes; the late David Aiken on the 50 anniversary of PH wrote a article on first 9 planes losses for a war magaine-he also added the fact that a IJN airman FPO 3/C Akira Okura was so badly wounded in PH attack he was obliged to retire from IJN service

In addition to the 29 DNR losses, of the 115 damaged in the attack, 29 were written off and discarded. So total losses were 58.

Thanks..In Walter Lord Day of Infany he remarks of 1 IJN Plane {Possibly a Val- as it is described as having a crew) which just made it its carriers before going down in sea {Crew rescued]
