Total Japanese losses capturing Hong Kong

Post by Fatboy Coxy » 04 Aug 2023 19:08

Hi all

Do we know what the total Japanese losses were, in capturing Hong Kong, and can this be broken down to units, especially the three infantry regiments, namely the 228th, 229th and 230th..

Wikipedia gives a number of figures,
Japanese reported 675 men killed, 2,079 wounded
and western estimates are 1,895 killed and 4,105 wounded, a total of 6,000 casualties.

According to Senshi Sosho;
228 Infantry Regiment: 65 killed and 240 injured
229 Infantry Regiment: 161 killed and 364 injured
230 Infantry Regiment: 232 killed and 436 injured
28th Engineer Regiment: 25 killed and 75 injured

Thank you guys, that's most helpful. Just adding the numbers killed in the infantry and engineers, and taking that off the total of 675, leaves us with 172 others killed, which seems quite a lot. Was there any other unit that suffered significant losses?

38th Division - 548 killed, 1,189 wounded
(45 were killed in other units of 38 Division than infantry regiments and engineer regiment.)
Units attached to 38th Div - 114 killed, 186 wounded
Units under the direct control of the 23rd Army - 15 killed, 30 wounded
Navy - 6 killed, 8 wounded

Note that these data are from Senshi Shosho. As I said, Senshi Sosho states that 683 were killed in total.
