Questions on the Japanese Kota Bharu Invasion Forces

Post by Fatboy Coxy » 07 Jan 2024 14:41

Hi all, I have a few questions relating to the Japanese invasion convoy employed in the first wave of landings in Northeastern Malaya at Kota Bharu, on the 8th December 1941.

The land forces they carried were units of the Japanese 23rd Inf Brigade – Maj Gen H Takumi, with the 56th Inf Rgt plus attached supporting units, all from the 18th Infantry Division.

I am unaware where these troops originated from, was it Samah, Hainan Island, or Saigon, French Indo China.

If from Hainan Island, did they sail with the Singora and Pattani invasion convoys or separately, were they an 18-knot convoy.

If from Saigon, when did they leave Saigon, and where did they rendezvous with their IJN escort.

If anyone can add or correct any information to my list, I would most apricate it

My Primary sources are from

They sailed together in one convoy.

Hi Taki

Thank you for this, it raises a couple of other questions you might be able to answer for me, please. I'd read that the convoy was 18 strong, and one source said 19 transports strong, but with those three it would be 21, am I correct?

Did the whole of the 18th Infantry Division move to Hainan Island prior to 7th December?

It was fun. Running bare foot through history and giggling madly has been my forte for decades.

Whenever I run barefoot, I only find bits of the grandkids Lego, or small stones, giggling madly is not how I would describe myself then!

The convoy consisted of 17 transports and one hospital ship. Four transports joined off Saigon. So, the total is 22 ships.

No, 18th Division was staying at Canton.

Thank you Taki, but apologies, more questions

can you confirm Naminoue Maru was hospital ship

Did the transports Awajisan Maru, Ayatosan Maru and Sakura Maru pick up the 18th Divisional troops at Canton, then sail to Samah to rendezvous with the rest of the convoy.

Can you tell me which four ships joined the convoy off Saigon.

Hi Taki

Can you confirm that is Hushimi and not Fushimi, as neihorster has
http://www.niehorster.org/014_japan/41- ... kra_01.htm

Searching the internet, there are a lot of Japanese ships named Fushimi, the most obvious is the sister to Sawa Maru, a 10,000+ ton passenger/cargo ship, but that is much larger than ship Neihorster has.

I found one entry for Hushimi, which was to sail from Japan to take an official there in August 1941 but the sailing was cancelled, but I have no details of that ship

These four ships carried part of 143rd Infantry Regt to Kra Isthmus, the other three ships were

AP Miike Maru, 11,738 GRT
AP Toho Maru, 4,092 GRT
AP Zenyo Maru, 6,742 GRT

is it correct that they joined the convoys from Phu Quoc Island

Also did the Hakabusan Maru, which carried part of Imperial Guards to Bangkok join the convoys from Saigon or Phu Quoc Island?

Both are right. "ふ" is written as Hu or Fu in Roman. See below.

> Also did the Hakabusan Maru, which carried part of Imperial Guards to Bangkok join the convoys from Saigon or Phu Quoc Island?

It is not Hakabusan Maru, but Hakubasan Maru. It did not join any convey, but sailed solely. It departed from Saigon and waited near Phu Quoc Island for three days. Then, it moved to Bangkok.
