バングス島 and ハブブ島

Post by Berend » 06 Feb 2024 04:53

On 4 May 1942 the minelayer Okinoshima departs Tulagi area, Solomons for the sea between イサベル島 and バングス島 to avoid air attacks. Enroute she undergoes an air attack north of ハブブ島.
I can not find バングス島 and ハブブ島? Does someone know which islands these are?

It is not ハブブ島, but パブブ島 (Pavuvu Island). It is one of Russell Islands.

バングス島 will be Banks Islands in Vanuatu.

Thank you for your reply Taki.
バングス島 can't be Banks Island in Vanuatu. It lies in the opposite direction of Pavuvu Island and it is to far away. It probably is one of the Islands between the Russell Islands and Vella Lavella Island but have not found a name that matches バングス島.

Banika island is right next to Pavuvu--not much distance at all...

It is difficult to think バングス島 as Banika island. Banika island is written バニカ島 in Japanese. It is quite different from バングス島.

I got it! バングス島 is Vangunu Island, a part of the New Georgia Islands. バングス島 is typo. It is バングヌ島 in Japanese.

Thank you for taking the time to find the correct name of the second island. Good detective work.
