Japanese naval actions against South America?
Does any one know if there were any Japanese naval actions or incursions against Central and South American countries during the war?

Re:
I remember the I-400 was intended to attack the Panama canal with 10 planes. The I-19 submarine was used to sink not only the Donerail but also another Panamian merchant ship, the Atlantic Gulf, on June 6, 1942. The I-21 submarine sank the Guatemala off New South Wales on June 12. However, the locations where these merchant ships were attacked makes clear the Imperial Japanese Navy didn't attack South America.

Re: Japanese naval actions against South America?
Hi aftershock2222,
I looked at this some years ago.
Virtually the only shipping lanes on the planet where convoys were not introduced were those off the West coast of South America. The reason was the lack of a significant threat.
Indeed, when the U-Boat campaign against the Americas began in early 1942, some shipping was diverted via Cape Horn up the West coast of South America to avoid it.
The only transitory threat was from the very occasional German auxiliary merchant cruiser. One sank two or three vessels near the Galapagos, if I remember correctly.
Cheers,
Sid.
