Hendan ?

Post by Gormadoc » 10 Sep 2007 10:15

What does the word "Hendan" translate to in English.

I have seen it used as name of army, as in "6. Hendan"

But i suspect it is actually a bad/wrong translation/usage of the word "Hendan"

thx for any help.

The most likely word is heidan(兵団). This word refers to a combat group from regiment to corps size, especially a temporal formation. Iwojima garrison was often referred as Kuribayashi Heidan. But heidan was called by a location, leader or a codename, not by number.
Another candidate is hoheidan(歩兵団). After disbanding two infantry brigades in each square divisions, IJA left hoheidan as a group of three infantry regiments. Some independent hoheidan were formed from split infantry regiments with various number, but hoheidan in old divisions had its number from its division number. For example 6. hoheidan belonged to infantry 6th division
Infantry 6th division

I believe "Tokukbetsu" means "special" and not "base forces".

Tokubetsu Rikusentai = Special Naval Landing Force

Many thanks Akira Takizawa! This forum is a GREAT resource for gamers such as myself. I greatly appreciate all the expertise here.

If I may impose one more time, I'm also trying to fill out an alternate list of unit names for my mod. Some of them I see in this thread, others I haven't. what would be terms for the following:

Fighter Regiment (Army)
Navy Fighter Regiment
Bomber Regiment = Bakugeki Sentai?
Heavy Bomber Regiment
Fighter Bomber Regiment
Torpedo Bomber Regiment
Dive Bomber Regiment
Transport Regiment
Patrol Aircraft Regiment

Tank Corps
Cavalry Division
Infantry/Regular Army Corps
Marine Division
Paratroop Division = Teishin Dan?
Special Naval Landing Force = Tokubetsu Rikusentai
Militia/Home defense Regiment
Artillery Brigade
Self Propelled Artillery Brigade
Anti-Aircraft Regiment = Bōkū Rentai
Self Propelled Anti-Aircraft Regiment
Self Propelled Anti-Tank Regiment
Recon Regiment (as in armored cavalry)

I realize some of these would be historical fiction to some degree such as a Marine division. If I'm not mistaken there were no Marine "Divisions" per se. But if it is possible to speculate I would appreciate it greatly.

Many thanks again! :)
