I read somewhere that most of foreign currency reserves had to be burned during the evacuation process as Axis forces were closing in fast.

Now let's talk about gold reserves.
According to researcher Dusan Babac there were 204 crates of gold in possession of National Bank just before April 1941 (in Yugoslavia).
Italians managed to confiscate 179 crates with 8,393 kilograms of .9999 gold.
Germans took four crates. What happened to the rests is disputable (some were stolen, 13 crates were apparently evacuated).

Italian gold was taken by Germans in 1943, in 1945 US troops sized it and returned to Italy then all 8,393 kilograms were returned back to Yugoslavia. Germany returned 2,172 kg after the war.

Hi, GregSingh, thank for your information. I don't know Italian 179 crates with 8393 kg gold while German 4 x crates but when war ended, German returned 2172 kg gold, is is size of crate is different ? Thank

And I am curious if Italian received more gold than German ?
