Flak emplacement at Merville battery
Hello Jos and Kurt,
Interesting about the R612's, do you konw if anybody have measured them? That should tell the difference from the R669. Before I went to Normady in 2004 I asked H. Lippmann at DAWA about the bunkers at Merville and he said that bunker No 7 was a R622 serving as group shelter. After my visit however I think it looks much more like a R501, with a very large emerency exit. Do you have any other information? Bunker No 6 is a R502 which served as command bunker.

Metzler

yes he said that was the kitchen. for the triangular concrete construction left by the "statue" he said that was the fisrt flak emplacement but destroyed .
Hello,...
Intresting information you came up with Ben. The British inteligence report made 8 May, 1944 mentions three light AA positions. Could both the kitchen roof and the triangular construction have been used at the same time, or did they move the Flak gun to the kitchen after the triangular emplacement was destroyed (maybe in the air raid 20th or 29th April)? During the first raid over the battery the battery only had one "Erika" 20mm Flak" to shoot back with (Bernage, G., Red Devils in Normandy, Heimdal)
Kurt, in yor pictures from bunker No 3, there seems to be a ladder going down in the floor opening. Is this a R612 modified with a Hülsenraum, emegrency exit, or is it just for drainage? Does anybody know?

Hi
Just back from Normandy, my first visit was HKB Merville, was there also in 2017 and I noticed, that they "updated" it ( new layout / buildings )
Made a drone flight above the area ( see below picture ). Based on several websites, there were 2 x R612, 1 x R611 and 1 x R669.
However, when I had a look at the website of Batterie de Merville, https://www.batterie-merville.com/en/th ... e-battery/
they mentioned :
quote
The first concrete pillbox to be cast was number 1, also known as a type H611, the largest of the four pillboxes. This was followed by pillboxes 2, 3 and 4, all type H669.

My question, is the above, from the website of Batterie de Merville correct ?

Re: Flak emplacement at Merville battery
No it's not. If you check aerial photos you can see the difference between the casemates. A 612 is smaller than a 669.
Re: Flak emplacement at Merville battery
OK, thanks for the confirmation !

hello pvv8,
the fonction bunker for the german is very important. I never see the document with the regelbau followed of SK. even with a construction variant the type remains the same.

Hi Moonraker,
Could you clarify what you mean exactly ?
The R669 and R612 have 2 flanking walls...is it that ?
Thanks in advance

hi
Not that the bunker type is a protective wall, a modify room or an extension modification the type does not take vf7b + SK,or others.

Re: Flak emplacement at Merville battery
Ah OK, I took the name from a reliable website and due to the fact that both of them had significant modification, I thought it was correct.
Thanks, it's good to know !
